Online Counseling
If you have been considering finding a counselor and incorporating counseling into your mental health regimen, you may be concerned with being able to incorporate it into your impossibly busy schedule. In fact, being constrained for time is one of the biggest reasons people give for avoiding counseling as a remedy for their mental health issues. Especially in a day and age where everything is available at the drop of a hat, many people are hesitant to commit hours of their time on a weekly basis to something as intangible as counseling. This is a primary reason that many turn to prescription drugs is that they are convenient. Imagine if counseling sessions were as convenient; many people dependent upon pharmaceuticals to facilitate their mental well being may be able to liberate themselves from the drugs and find more natural methods of obtaining a feeling of mental wellbeing. Fortunately, such a miraculous means of attaining counseling does exist, and it can be found in the form of online counseling.
While not really new, online counseling is a relatively unheard of practice. In fact, while many such operations have been in business since the 1990’s, very few people know of their existence. This can be a detriment to people who are suffering from the banes of depression or other mental illness and who think that counseling may not be a viable option in their situation. In fact, many mental health professionals agree that if online counseling were more widely advertised, many, many more people in need of such services would find a way to avail of themselves more readily.
You may be asking yourself how in the world online counseling services work. I mean, part of the reason counseling services are so effective is due to the face to face interaction that occurs between the counselor and the patient. Some may find the distancing of the counselor and their patient to be a little off-putting. However, there are many others who believe that they would feel far more comfortable in a situation where they had some distance between themselves and the person they were spilling their guts to. It is a personal preference, and while probably not the ideal treatment in every situation, online counseling certainly has a niche.
There are several different methods in which online counseling may occur. These include chat sessions, email correspondence, and even video chat sessions. In reality, there is not much that can be done during a traditional counseling session that cannot be accomplished with online counseling. In addition, because online counselors generally do not have to ‘set up shop’ in a brick and mortar office building like a traditional counselor does, they tend to charge notably less for their services. However, even in you pay a little less for service; you should not compromise your standards. It is important for people seeking the services of an online counselor to hold their counselor to the same high, impeccable standards as you would any other counselor. If fact, it may be a good idea to raise your standards. This is because you are unlikely to meet your counselor face to face. For this reason, you will be required to rely more heavily on credentials and recommendations than your own instinct. This can be a risky practice, so it is imperative that you keep your bar raised as high as possible.
The bottom line is that your mental health is important, and not something that should be ignored due to time constraints. If you feel as though you have the need of a qualified counselor, you may very well want to consider online counseling. Just remember to do your homework and set your standards high, and you may very well find an online counselor that not only meets your needs but exceeds your expectations.
